WHAT IS INTERNET?
According to us,”The Internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks that use the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link devices worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of private, public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope, linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies.”
Simply stated, the internet is a connection of many computers or servers which help us to retrive information and data.
The internet was developed by the “United States Department of Defence Advance Research Projects Agency” (DARPA) which is in the United States. The first ever connection was known as the ARPANET and it was connected on October 1969. The most popular service of the internet is the World Wide Web (WWW) and it was created at CERN in Switzerland in 1990 by a British (UK) man named Tim Berners-Lee. The World Wide Web is the most used service on the internet and it is also known as the “Web”. It contains websites that includes blogs and wikis in it. Everybody can read these web pages and it can be seen by anyone on the internet unless it requires a password. The internet has no centralized government itself for the technological implementation or for the access and usage. Each and every authorized network has to set its own policy.
In today’s world, internet is used for many purposes such as for sending electronic mails, online chat through many applications, to transfer file from one device to another and we can find infinite information on infinite topics. The most biggest and important use of internet is to send and receive e-mails. E-mail is secure and private and it goes from one user to another. Instant messaging applications or websites such as AIM or ICQ allows more than two people for chat to each other and it is much faster.
Without a doubt we can say that internet has become a great power. But with great power, comes great dangers.Recently there has been an increase in the fraudlant activities on the internet. It has become a source of infecting computers eith viruses, trojans, worms etc.
Internet security is a branch of computer security specifically related to the Internet, often involving browser security but also network security on a more general level, as it applies to other applications or operating systems as a whole. Its objective is to establish rules and measures to use against attacks over the Internet.
TYPES OF MALICIOUS PROGRAMS and VIRUSES
A computer virus is a self replicating computer program which can attach itself to other files/programs, and can execute secretly when the host program/file is activated. When the virus is executed, it can perform a number of tasks, such as erasing your files/hard disk, displaying nuisance information, attaching to other files, etc.
TYPES OF VIRUSES
This type will reside in main system memory. Whenever the operating system executes a file, the virus will infect a file if it is a suitable target, for example, a program file.
Program File Virus
This will infect programs like EXE, COM, SYS etc.
The virus itself can change form using various polymorphism techniques.
Boot Sector Virus
This type will infect the system area of a disk, when the disk is accessed initially or booted.
A virus which uses various stealth techniques in order to hide itself from detection by anti-virus software.
Unlike other virus types, these viruses attack data files instead of executable files.
Macro viruses are particularly common due to the fact that:
They attach to documents and files, which are platform independent.
The document is sent to other computers by, for example, email or file exchange. Recipients are receiving the infected document from a “trusted” sender.
A virus spread by email message
